Quick answer
Armrests are only useful if they fit the desk and the way the chair is used. Measure desk underside height, chair armrest height range, seat height range and how far the chair must tuck in before buying.
Clearance checklist
- Measure from the floor to the underside of the desk or keyboard tray.
- Check minimum and maximum armrest height, not only seat height.
- Check whether armrests are fixed, height-adjustable, flip-up or removable.
- Allow space for desk legs, drawers, cable trays and monitor-arm clamps.
- Confirm the chair can still move where it needs to in a small room.
Trade-offs
Fixed arms may feel simpler but can block desk clearance. Adjustable or flip-up arms can improve fit flexibility, but check wobble, width and return terms if clearance is tight.
