The desk thickness, rear lip shape, underside clearance, and surface material can affect whether a clamp is suitable to consider as much as the screen weight or arm reach. Follow a clear measurement sequence: check the thickness, look underneath for obstructions, and always verify the arm manufacturer’s limits. Desk-edge checks
- First, measure the desktop thickness at the exact point where the clamp will sit.
- Next, look under the desk to identify crossbars, cable trays, metal frames, or modesty panels that could block the clamp screw.
- Verify the rear edge is deep and flat enough for the entire clamp plate to make full contact.
- Check the chosen arm manufacturer’s minimum and maximum clamp range against your measurements.
- Never assume glass, hollow-core, folding, or very thin desks are suitable for a clamp without explicit guidance from the desk and arm manufacturers.
Clamp versus grommet mounting
A clamp mount may be easier when the back edge is clear. A grommet mount may suit some desks with a cable hole, but it still needs the correct hole size, underside access and manufacturer approval.
If the desk has a cable tray, drawer pack or wall gap, sketch the mount position before ordering so the arm, clamp screw and cables all have room.
Screen and arm checks
- Check screen weight without the stand, not only the boxed weight.
- Check VESA pattern, screw depth notes and any curved-screen restrictions.
