Do not compare only the annual headline
Ofgem announced a July to September 2026 price-cap increase for a typical household on default tariffs. Your actual bill depends on use, region, meter and payment method, so the annual headline is only a starting point.
Separate unit rates and standing charges
A lower unit rate does not automatically make a tariff fit if standing charges, exit fees or payment requirements change. Write the pieces down separately before comparing.
Check whether you are on a fixed tariff
Households already on fixed tariffs are not affected in the same way as default-tariff customers. Check end date, exit fee and what happens when the fix ends before acting.
Check support routes early
If a bill becomes difficult, contact the supplier early and ask what support or repayment options apply. Do not wait until the account is already in trouble.
