- Brand page identifies the 42 litre model.
Drawbacks
- May be too tall for many beds; clearance must be checked carefully.

Choose this if / Avoid this if
Rule out poor-fit options before comparing finer details.
Avoid if
- Skip this guide if you need live prices, stock, ratings, review counts, professional testing or guaranteed outcomes.
- Skip this guide if the exact model, dimensions, compatibility, care wording, warranty route or returns cannot be checked before checkout.
- Skip this guide if you need fitted furniture, load-bearing guarantees, wall-fixing proof, damp-area suitability, child-safety proof or durability guarantees.
Dealbreakers
- The current seller page does not confirm the exact model or bundle contents.
- The product dimensions, material, compatibility, care instructions, warranty route or return terms do not fit your setup.
- The purchase depends on a claim that is not supported by the current product source.
Check before buying
- Check under-bed clearance, move-out portability and whether lids are needed.
- Confirm exact model identity, dimensions, included accessories, support route, returns and UK seller details before checkout.
- Check current source and seller pages; do not rely on this page for live price, stock, availability, ratings or review counts.
- Avoid unsupported load-bearing, wall-fixing, damp-area, child-safety, durability, waterproofing or universal-fit assumptions.
Choose another shortlist if
- Use the under-bed storage-box guide when the lowest clearance and access opening decide the choice.
- Use the clear storage-box guide when seeing the contents without opening each box matters most.
- Use the stackable-box guide when vertical storage is essential, and check the exact stacking instructions.
Detailed buyer guidance
Storage for student rooms: measure the opening, then choose the container
Start with the space you can actually reach. Measure the lowest point under the bed, the gap between legs or supports, and the floor area needed to pull a box out. A container can fit beneath a bed and still be impossible to open without moving furniture.
For bedding and seasonal clothes, compare the three low-profile options first. For taller items or files, the Really Useful 42-litre box offers a different shape, but its 31 cm external height makes it unsuitable for many low under-bed gaps. Litres alone do not tell you whether a box will fit.
Compare the four formats
IKEA SKUBB 705.910.56: a zip-up case for textiles
This dark-grey SKUBB is 65 cm wide, 53 cm deep and 19 cm high. IKEA describes a polyester fabric case with a handle and corner ventilation mesh, intended for clothes and bedding. The care instructions specify vacuuming or a lint roller and say not to wash it.
Choose this format when the contents are dry textiles and you want an enclosed case rather than an open tray. The trade-off is cleaning: it is a poor match for muddy shoes or items likely to spill. Do not treat the fabric, zip or ventilation mesh as waterproof protection. Confirm the 65 × 53 × 19 cm version; other SKUBB sizes share the name. Exact SKUBB source.
IKEA SOCKERBIT 204.115.24: a low rigid box with its lid included
The white SOCKERBIT is 77 cm long, 50 cm wide and 19 cm high, with a stated 55-litre volume. IKEA includes the lid and provides wipe-clean care instructions. It also identifies areas for writing or adding labels, useful when the contents are hidden by the opaque sides.
This remains the first rigid under-bed comparison when those dimensions fit. Check the full 77 cm length against bed legs, and leave access to the lid. Its ventilation detail means an included lid should not be read as a watertight seal. If you need to identify contents without opening anything, compare a transparent format instead. Exact SOCKERBIT source.
IKEA SAMLA 001.301.29: transparent storage, with a separate lid decision
This 55-litre SAMLA measures 78 × 56 × 18 cm. It is a broad, shallow transparent box, so it is worth comparing when seeing stored items matters more than hiding them. The matching 55/130-litre lid is sold separately: include it in the total if you need covered storage.
The quoted 18 cm is the box height. Check the complete lidded arrangement and clearance before assuming it will pass a tight opening. IKEA recommends indoor use, does not approve it for food contact, and gives specific stacking instructions and a warning against children playing inside a closed box. Read those instructions if stacking or family visits are relevant. Exact SAMLA source.
Really Useful Box 42 litre: deeper storage with published internal dimensions
The manufacturer’s 42-litre page lists approximately 52 × 44 × 31 cm externally and 40.5 × 36.5 × 28 cm internally. It states that external measurements include lid and handles, while internal figures represent minimum dimensions. The box includes a lid and has a quoted empty weight of 2.52 kg.
Choose this format only when the taller container solves a real storage job and the room has space for it. Use internal dimensions to check files or equipment; use external dimensions for the shelf, floor or car boot. The empty weight also matters on move-out day. Match the clear version rather than borrowing claims made for the separately described “white strong” material. 42-litre manufacturer specifications.
Plan daily access and the end-of-term move
- Put frequently used items where one container can be reached without unloading several others. Seasonal bedding can go further back.
- Split bulky textiles from dense books or equipment. A box’s volume is not a comfortable carrying-weight target, and this comparison has not established carrying or stacking load limits.
- Check the path through the room, stairs and transport as well as the storage gap. A wide low box may be awkward to carry even when it fits under a bed.
- Label opaque containers by contents and destination. Use the same system when repacking so move-out does not turn into opening every box.
Which route should you use next?
If low clearance decides everything, continue with under-bed storage boxes. If finding contents quickly is the main problem, compare clear storage boxes. For vertical storage, check the exact products and instructions in the stackable-box guide; a lid alone does not establish a safe stack.
These are published dimensional and care differences; carrying, durability and dust ingress are not independently measured here. None of the four should be assumed lockable, fireproof or waterproof. Confirm the exact size, lid contents, current delivered price and return terms before ordering.
What would change the winner?
The lead pick remains the right starting point only while this shortlist matches your priorities. Reconsider it when a different use case or fit requirement matters more.

FAQs & alternatives
Should I measure inside or outside the box?
Both. Outside dimensions decide whether it fits the room; inside dimensions decide whether your possessions fit. Include handles and lid in the room measurement.
Is the SAMLA lid included?
The checked IKEA 00130129 listing sells the lid separately. Confirm the exact article and current bundle before ordering.
