Verdict
For a straightforward HDMI or DisplayPort setup, the GW2790 combines Full HD with a listed 100Hz refresh rate. The trade-off is fewer pixels than the QHD and 4K options and a tilt-only stand. Check text scaling, required screen height and the supported timing for your input before buying.

Verdict
For a DisplayPort gaming setup, the 27GP850-B offers QHD at 165Hz, or 180Hz overclocked; HDMI is limited to QHD at 144Hz. Its 291.2mm with-stand depth needs desk space and it cannot charge a laptop over USB-C. Check the exact model suffix, input and graphics output.

Choose this if / Avoid this if
Rule out poor-fit options before comparing finer details.
Avoid if
- Skip this guide if you are undecided on size and may be better served by ultrawide, 24-inch, or 32-inch options.
Dealbreakers
- Treat it as a dealbreaker if stand adjustability, port mix, or resolution at 27-inch does not fit your workload.
Check before buying
- Check desk depth, stand footprint, and required HDMI/DisplayPort/USB-C compatibility before checkout.
Choose another shortlist if
- Choose another route if your main constraint is gaming refresh, MacBook docking, or strict budget caps instead of size.
Detailed buyer guidance
A 27-inch screen does not tell you how much workspace, charging capability or desk room you will get. Start with the connection your computer can actually supply, then compare resolution and the stand.
Compare the four setups
| Monitor | Resolution and published refresh | Laptop video and charging | Stand adjustment | With-stand depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BenQ GW2790 | 1920 x 1080; listed 100Hz | Two HDMI 1.4 inputs and DisplayPort 1.2; no USB-C charging | Tilt | 182mm |
| Dell S2722QC | 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz | USB-C video and up to 65W PD; two HDMI inputs | Height, tilt, swivel and pivot | 174.7mm |
| LG 27GP850-B | 2560 x 1440; DP 165Hz or 180Hz overclocked, HDMI up to 144Hz | DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI inputs; no USB-C | Height, tilt and pivot | 291.2mm |
| Samsung LS27CG552EUXXU | 2560 x 1440; listed 165Hz | DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0; no USB-C charging | Tilt | 272.6mm |
These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not measured performance. The BenQ and Samsung headline refresh figures do not establish every input timing: consult the exact model’s supported-timing table and your graphics output before assuming the maximum through HDMI, a dock or an adapter.
Choose resolution before chasing a label
Full HD gives the BenQ fewer pixels across the same 27-inch diagonal than either QHD model or the 4K Dell. That can suit someone who wants larger interface elements without a high-resolution setup, but it is not equivalent detail at the same viewing distance.
Dell’s 4K panel provides more pixels for documents and images. You may need operating-system scaling to make text a comfortable size; scaling and application behaviour matter more than simply setting everything to its smallest size. For games, resolution and frame-rate targets must also fit the graphics hardware.
LG and Samsung offer QHD with higher listed refresh ceilings than the Dell. Refresh rate is not proof of response quality, low blur or the frame rate your computer can sustain.
When USB-C can replace two cables
Dell is the only model here with documented USB-C video and laptop power delivery. Its up-to-65W supply is useful only when the laptop accepts USB-C charging, supports the required video mode and is connected by a cable rated for both functions.
A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output. Check the laptop’s DisplayPort Alt Mode support and power requirements, plus the cable and any dock. A laptop needing more power may still need its own charger. The other three monitors require a separate video connection and laptop power supply; a USB hub does not turn them into USB-C charging displays.
Measure more than the stand depth
The depth column describes the monitor assembly with its supplied stand. It is not a minimum safe desk depth or a complete clearance allowance. Leave room for cables, ventilation, keyboard position and a comfortable viewing distance, following the manufacturer’s placement instructions.
Dell and LG offer height adjustment; BenQ and Samsung list tilt-only stands. A low shelf or fixed desk height can therefore change the shortlist before display specifications do. If considering an arm, verify the exact monitor’s mounting specification and supported mass against the arm and desk instructions. Do not infer arm compatibility from screen size.
Why Dell remains the starting point
Dell’s role is the adjustable 4K desk-work setup with compatible USB-C video and charging. BenQ is the Full HD alternative, not a promise of today’s lowest price. LG is the DisplayPort high-refresh option; Samsung is the curved-screen alternative.
If the deciding need is desk work rather than size alone, compare monitors for home working. For a fixed spending ceiling, use monitors under £300 and check current checkout totals.
What would change the recommendation
A required input, laptop power requirement, fixed screen height or inadequate desk space can rule out a model. Exact model substitutions also need a new check: LG 27GP850P-B is not silently interchangeable with 27GP850-B, and different Samsung G5 sizes or generations are not the LS27CG552EUXXU.
Known limitations
This is a desk-based specification comparison without first-party display measurements. We have not measured text comfort, colour accuracy, motion behaviour, noise or long-term reliability. Current prices, sellers, delivery, UK plug arrangements and warranty terms require checkout checks; a research update is not proof that every merchant offer has been refreshed.

FAQs & alternatives
Is 27-inch always better than 24-inch?
Not always. 27-inch works best when desk depth and resolution choice keep text and layout comfortable.
Should I choose 4K or QHD at 27-inch?
QHD is 2560 x 1440; 4K is 3840 x 2160. More pixels do not guarantee comfortable text at default settings. Check operating-system scaling and application support; higher resolution also increases the graphics workload in games.
Why are curved and flat options both included?
Samsung supplies the curved option; the other three are flat. Choose by your seating position and preference, not a claim that curvature is universally more comfortable.
