What the findings suggest
Before checkout
Returns and support are almost universal checks
Returns, warranty or support language appears in 96% of analysed guides. This reflects a deliberate editorial check, not evidence that the same proportion of purchases goes wrong.
After purchase
Ownership costs are concentrated by category
258 guides include running, subscription, replacement or other ongoing-cost checks.
Services and travel
Terms matter beyond physical products
283 guides include contract, cancellation, deposit, renewal or booking-term checks.

How the index was built
We reviewed the structured buying checks used across published UK Shortlists guides. Each guide was counted once for each recurring issue, then the results were grouped by buying area to show which difficulties appear most often.
- This describes the published UK Shortlists guide collection; it is not a survey of all UK consumers or the whole retail market.
- Guide counts indicate recurring decision checks, not prevalence, severity, spending or harm.
- Keyword groups are documented and reproducible but do not replace qualitative consumer research.
- No personal data, proprietary retailer performance data or unsupported market-wide claim is included.
