Start with the space
Use this checklist before comparing storage boxes, shelving, drawer units, garden storage, cupboard organisers or utility-room storage. The first decision is whether the storage will fit the space and routine, not which retailer page looks best.
Measure the width, depth, height, door swing, shelf clearance, skirting, radiator position and walkway around the storage area. For sheds, garages and outdoor spaces, also check rain exposure, ground level, wind exposure, anchoring needs and whether a delivery parcel could be handled safely at the address.
Measurements to capture first
- Maximum outside width, depth and height for the storage item.
- Internal capacity needed, including whether contents are long, heavy, fragile, damp, seasonal or awkwardly shaped.
- Door, drawer, lid or sliding clearance once the item is in place.
- Stack height and whether the base, shelf or floor can sensibly handle the load.
- Access route from delivery point to final location, including stairs, lifts, narrow doors and garden paths.
- Whether the item needs to be wiped, labelled, moved often, child-resistant, pet-resistant or weather-aware.

Do not rely on product images alone. Storage can look tidy in photos while failing on depth, lid clearance, handle position, stacking stability, shelf height or delivery practicality.
