Start with the accommodation inventory
Before ordering anything, check what the room or property already includes. Ask for the current inventory, room dimensions and rules on cooking appliances, wall fixings, extension leads, furniture and deliveries. A useful student checklist separates three groups: bring on day one, buy after seeing the room, and share with housemates.
Do not build the list from generic “student essentials” bundles. They often duplicate supplied items and can turn uncertain room sizes into unnecessary purchases.
Bring on day one
Prioritise items needed to sleep, wash, charge essential devices and complete the first day of study. Check bedding dimensions, prescription or personal-care needs, device chargers, identification and any arrival instructions supplied by the university or accommodation provider.
For charging, match the cable and charger to the actual device before opening the portable power guides. A high wattage number alone does not prove compatibility. Keep extension leads and electrical items within the accommodation rules and manufacturer instructions.
Buy after seeing the room
Delay storage, desk accessories, extra lighting, kitchen equipment and larger electronics until you have measured the usable space. Check socket locations, desk depth, chair clearance, wardrobe capacity and shared-kitchen storage. For a study setup, use the home office guides only after those measurements are known.
If a kettle, air fryer, coffee machine or other countertop appliance is allowed, check whether it belongs in a shared kitchen and how cleaning will work. Do not assume an appliance is permitted in a bedroom because it is compact.
Coordinate shared purchases
Ask housemates before buying shared pans, cleaning equipment, drying racks, routers or kitchen appliances. Agree who owns the item, how running supplies are replaced and what happens when somebody moves out. Shared buying is usually easier when one clear problem is solved at a time.
Check memberships separately from the shopping list
Prime Student may be relevant to some eligible students, but it is a separate membership decision. Check eligibility, the trial period, renewal price, how to cancel and which benefits you would actually use. Do not treat a promotional offer or commission-paying link as evidence that the membership is right for you.
