Quick answer

Do not identify a lamp by shape alone. Read the marking on the existing lamp or fitting, check available dimensions and confirm how the wall control supplies power.

Physical and control checks

  • Exact cap or base, lamp shape and maximum physical dimensions.
  • Open or enclosed fitting and current maker restrictions.
  • Existing dimmer, transformer or other control equipment.
  • Whether constant power is required for app or automation control.
  • Required physical control when a phone or network is unavailable.
  • For a switch product, the exact circuit and wiring assessment from a competent electrician.

Hidden trade-offs

Smart bulbs are easy to change but can lose control when wall power is switched off. A switch-led route can preserve familiar wall control but brings fixed-wiring and load compatibility constraints.

Source and boundary

The Matter FAQ is useful for ecosystem planning, but physical fitting and electrical control still require exact manufacturer documentation. This checklist does not assess fixed wiring or authorise electrical work.

Before you buy

Verify base, dimensions, enclosure, dimmer or transformer, controller, exact UK model, current product instructions and returns.
