A compact sofa bed has to pass three different fit tests: it must enter the home, work as a seat when closed and leave a usable sleeping and walking area when open. Complete all three before comparing the current four formats.
1. Measure the delivery route
Record the narrowest clear width and height at the outside door, hallway, internal door and stairway. Include handrails, radiators, low ceilings and the space needed to turn at corners. Compare these measurements with the packaged dimensions where the retailer publishes them—not only the assembled sofa size. Ask the retailer which parts arrive detached rather than assuming arms or legs can be removed.
2. Mark the closed footprint
Tape the published closed width and depth on the floor. Add clearance for skirting boards, door swings, drawers, sockets and any reclining or click-clack movement. Sit a chair inside the outline to judge how much circulation remains. A narrow chairbed may preserve floor space but provides a very different daytime seat from a two-seat sofa.
3. Mark the fully open footprint
Repeat the exercise with the published open depth and mechanism clearance. Leave a realistic path to the door and bathroom rather than filling every centimetre overnight. Check whether bedding, cushions or a side table need somewhere to move when the bed opens. If the retailer does not publish the full open size, ask for it or remove that option from a tight-space comparison.
4. Use the actual sleeping surface
Compare the stated sleeping width and length, not “single”, “small double” or “double” alone. Sofa-bed labels do not necessarily match common standalone mattress dimensions. Consider the intended sleeper’s height and whether one or two people actually need to use it, but do not infer comfort from thickness, price or mechanism. A separate mattress can change the ownership routine without guaranteeing better sleep.
5. Check the ownership route
Confirm assembly, room-of-choice delivery, packaging removal and unwanted-return collection terms before ordering. Large-item returns can require collection and incur conditions that a parcel return does not. Read the cover-care instructions, whether covers are removable and the retailer’s stated use profile. “Occasional use” should not be silently presented as an everyday-bed recommendation.
Keep a measurement record
Photograph the taped closed and open outlines and save the delivery-route measurements beside the exact product link. Recheck them if the colour, model code or retailer changes: different upholstery variants can have different packages, availability and collection terms even when the family name looks the same.
