Choose an inflator around the vehicle, parking location and number of tyres you expect to top up—not the largest pressure printed on the tyre. The current Top 4 separates simple 12V, digital auto-stop, larger corded and compact rechargeable formats.
1. Find the vehicle’s pressure figure
Use the pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer for the exact wheel/tyre setup and load condition. It is commonly shown on a door aperture or fuel-flap label and in the handbook. Do not use the maximum pressure moulded into the tyre sidewall as the normal target. Front and rear pressures may differ, and a heavily loaded journey may have separate guidance.
2. Check pressure when the tyres are cold
Follow the vehicle maker’s definition and timing for a cold check. Driving warms the tyre and changes the reading, so a convenient garage forecourt after a journey may not produce the same figure. Remove the valve cap, seat the connector squarely and avoid forcing or side-loading the valve stem.
3. Choose the power source around where the car lives
- 12V socket: no battery to recharge, but the lead and hose must reach every valve from the vehicle socket. Check the vehicle manual for socket use and any ignition-position requirement.
- Rechargeable: easier to carry around the car, but only useful when charged and stored within the maker’s conditions.
- Larger corded unit: may suit repeated use, but storage, reach and cooling instructions matter more.
Measure from the socket or likely tool position to the furthest valve, following a safe cable route rather than a straight-line guess.
4. Treat display and auto-stop as workflow features
A digital target and auto-stop can reduce crouching and repeated checking; an analogue dial avoids a separate rechargeable display. Neither format proves accuracy. Compare the result periodically with a separate reliable gauge and stop if readings conflict materially. A published inflation time only applies under the stated conditions and should not be converted into a guarantee for another tyre size or starting pressure.
5. Respect duty cycle and tool limits
Read how long the unit may run before cooling, especially if topping up several tyres. Keep the hose and cable clear of hot or moving parts. An inflator restores air pressure; it does not repair a puncture, make a damaged tyre roadworthy or replace breakdown support. Stop if the tyre, valve, connector or tool appears damaged.
Before putting it in the boot
Test the exact connector, cable reach, display and storage arrangement at home. Record the vehicle’s front/rear cold pressures somewhere accessible, keep valve caps together and recharge a cordless unit on a schedule. Recheck the live manual if the model or supplied accessories differ from the shortlisted version.
