No toy label replaces inspection. Use this checklist before, during and after supervised use; it is designed to help an owner notice a change in size, shape or condition that should pause use.
Before use
- Confirm the exact product and size match the maker’s guidance for your dog.
- Check the whole item: cavities, grooves, seams, rings, edges and any attached or moving part.
- Do not use a toy that is cracked, split, missing material, loose or small enough to be swallowed.
- If the toy is filled with food, check that food is appropriate for the dog and include it in the normal daily intake.
During supervised use
- Watch the first use of a new shape closely; different dogs grip and carry products differently.
- Pause if the dog starts to detach material, catches a tooth on a damaged edge or gets a part behind the back teeth.
- Keep the activity matched to the toy’s intended job. A fillable chew shape, tyre groove and ring are not interchangeable play tools.
After use and cleaning
- Inspect again for widening cracks, cuts, loose pieces, sharp edges and a meaningful change in size.
- Follow the exact washing instructions and check hollow areas or grooves for trapped residue.
- Replace rather than continue using a toy that has become damaged, loose or too small for the dog.
Evidence boundary
The checklist is practical buyer guidance based on published maker information. It does not prove that a toy is indestructible, safe without supervision, suitable for every dog or capable of preventing injury, dental problems or behavioural issues.
