Start with the booking terms, not the headline quote

Use this checklist when you are comparing a hire car for a UK departure, airport pickup, ferry-linked trip or overseas journey. It is a desk-based decision checklist, not a tested review of any rental company and not a live price or availability monitor.

The useful comparison is not only the first price you see. Before booking, separate the pickup location, driver requirements, deposit position, extras, cancellation rules and return process so you know what needs checking on the current provider page.

Checks before you book

  • Confirm the pickup and drop-off locations, opening hours, shuttle or desk instructions, and what happens if travel is delayed.
  • Check the minimum age, licence, payment-card and named-driver requirements for every driver.
  • Review the deposit, excess, fuel, mileage, one-way, late-return and additional-driver terms on the current booking page.
  • Compare extras such as child seats, additional equipment, cross-border use, toll handling and winter equipment where relevant.
  • Read the cancellation, amendment, no-show and refund wording before entering payment details.

What to compare on provider pages

Open the current provider or comparison page and check the rental summary, supplier terms, pickup instructions, payment requirements and any extra-fee wording before checkout. Keep screenshots or confirmation emails if the trip depends on a specific pickup time, driver setup or add-on.

If the booking is tied to a flight or ferry, leave enough time for queues, luggage, shuttle transfer, vehicle inspection and return. UK Shortlists does not verify live counter arrangements, vehicle availability, deposits, fees or cancellation outcomes.

When to choose a different route

Choose a different route if you need a private transfer, chauffeur service, taxi, rail ticket, airport parking, accessible transport advice, insurance advice or a provider-specific dispute guide. This page is for pre-booking car-hire checks only.

What this guide does not claim

This guide does not claim live rental prices, availability, guaranteed savings, supplier quality, customer ratings, customer counts, no hidden fees, deposit certainty, cancellation safety, rental outcome guarantees, cover advice, hands-on testing or personal rental experience.

Recheck the current provider page before booking, especially fees, deposits, extras, cancellation, amendments, driver requirements, pickup instructions and return rules.
