The first question is not “which machine is best?” It is “which process creates the object I need, and can I support the complete workflow?”
Start with the output
Write down three real objects. For each one, record:
- largest dimensions;
- required material or surface;
- detail or tolerance that matters;
- whether it is a one-off or repeated job;
- what must happen after the machine finishes.
This usually reveals the process:
- Filament 3D printing builds plastic parts layer by layer and often suits prototypes, brackets, enclosures and larger hobby models.
- Resin 3D printing can suit smaller, fine-detail objects, but washing, curing, handling, storage and waste are part of the purchase.
- Laser cutting or engraving cuts or marks supported sheet materials; exact configuration, enclosure, classification, materials and extraction instructions come first.
- 3D scanning captures an existing shape, then hands work to software for checking and editing.
- Vinyl cutting cuts film for decals, labels and transfers; it does not create a three-dimensional part.
- A service or makerspace can prove a process before you buy equipment for occasional work.
Measure the operating footprint
The box dimensions are not the workspace dimensions. Add room for:
- doors, lids, spools, screens and loading;
- part removal and maintenance access;
- material, tool and consumable storage;
- cleaning, finishing, washing, curing or weeding;
- extraction, cooling or other arrangements stated in current instructions;
- waste and completed-object storage.
Measure the route into the room as well as the place where the equipment will operate.
Check the source set
Before comparing exact machines, collect:
- the current manufacturer product page and manual for the exact model and module;
- current material instructions and, where applicable, a safety data sheet;
- software and operating-system requirements;
- exact package contents and required accessories;
- UK retailer delivery, return and warranty terms;
- applicable official UK guidance.
The HSE explains that a safety data sheet helps a user assess chemical hazards but is not itself a risk assessment. The OPSS review of 3D-printed spare parts also shows why an apparently simple printed replacement can have technical, safety and legal implications.
Know when not to buy
Use a service, makerspace or supervised session first when:
- the job is occasional or still poorly specified;
- there is no permanent operating and storage space;
- the intended process needs controls that have not been assessed;
- you do not yet know the file, material or finish requirement;
- a failed first attempt would be cheaper through a provider than through machine ownership.
