UK drone rules: the buying version

The product facts and UK checks that can turn an attractive drone into the wrong buy.

Quick answer

What matters first

Start with the exact aircraft, battery and ready-to-fly mass. Then check registration, class-mark transition, realistic operating route and the places you expect to use it.

The four details that change the answer

Model-family names are not enough. Battery choice, payload, camera and class mark can change the mass or operating fit.

  • Exact aircraft and battery
  • Ready-to-fly mass
  • Class mark on the aircraft
  • Expected places and type of flying

Registration is only the first check

Flyer and Operator ID thresholds matter, but an ID does not provide permission to fly at a location. Airspace, people, land rules, privacy and wildlife can still decide whether the purchase is useful.

Treat future changes separately

Current rules, official guidance, transition arrangements and announced proposals are shown separately. A proposal does not become a current buying rule just because it has been announced.
